Positive Psychology P4

Outline

Environment is powerful

  • How to Create a positive environment?
  • Priming: subconsciously / consciously (Prime: make ready for use or action; prepare; activate, 打底)
  • Have something you loved and positive in your environment:
    • Hanging photos of your family, have some art pieces you like, copy some quotes...
    • When you don't see them, you see them.
  • Do more research on positive psychology is priming ourselves with positive thoughts and feelings.

Think and believe, then affluence(abundance) will come to you (?

    • "Have great hopes and dare to go all out for them, have great dreams and dare to live them. Have tremendous expectations and believe in them. Have great faith in yourself and in the power of your mind... "
  • <<The secrets>>
    • The law of attraction

Mind create reality × Mind co-create reality √

  • Only a part of it
  • Has to come with a lot of hard work and persistence and a lot of failure. (Half / half)
    • In short term, for inspiration and wellbeing
    • In long term, for frustration and guilt
  • Often make it too idealistic, holding only the mindset but does away the hard work, the persistence and the failure that is necessary part and parcel of a successful, happy, fulfilling Human life.

Self-efficacy

Believing in oneself

  • Beliefs in personal efficacy affect life choices, level of motivation, quality of functioning, resilience to adversity and vulnerability to stress and depression.
    • Believe in themselves: do well in different areas.
    • Produce their own future rather than simply foretell it.
    • It can be learnt.
  • High correlation between self-efficacy(0.7) and wellbeing, low correlation between self-efficacy and material affluence and where we live.
  • "Self-concept is destiny"
  • The placebo effect

What mediate between beliefs expectations and actual performance in the real world

  • Motivation
    • hopeless -> resign
  • Consistency / Congruence
    • A mental schema of the world (perceive the world that ought to be) -> inside
    • Mind like to feel that inside and outside are congruent
    • When feel the inconsistency
      • update the schema
      • ignore it
      • actively seek confirmation: ignore the other side, only trying to confirm our mind

Interpret our performance

  • Sbjective, reality
  • Objective, our perspective
    • Edison: 5000 failures -> 5000 times succeed in showing what doesn't work.
  • Optimisim / Pessimisim
    • Pessimists: realistic in terms of long term goals and short term goals
    • Optimists: realistic in terms of long term goals but not in terms of long term goals(high level of belief and motivation) -> It's ok, and what can I learn from it, and next time I will do better
  • Interpret the failure not as permanent and pervasive one but temporary and specific one

How to identify what is realistic or not

  • The Stockdale Paradox (Balance)
    • Faith + Facts
    • Realistic Optimisim

Response Paper

  • The power of mind is often underestimated because thinking is easy, doing is hard and we often set up our mind and expectation high but fail to go through the hard works and failures in the long term and lead to frustration and guilt.

  • So, we gradually lose the belief in our mind and sometimes question ourselves, making extra effort without a clear destination. It's like going on a journey without knowing where is the end.

  • Sometime these negative state can't be tuned up internally, just as men are blind in their own cause. Then we should feel the external strength in environment to shape our thoughts, beliefs, and actions. We are constantly influenced by our surroundings, whether consciously or subconsciously. So, by creating a positive environment we can foster a positive mindset.

  • One way to create the positive environment and prime ourselves with positive thoughts and feelings is to have something we love and appreciate in our environment. This could be anything from hanging photos of our loved ones, having art pieces that show power and beauty, or displaying inspiring quotes. They create a positive environment and help us maintain a positive outlook on life. When we don't see them, we"see" them.

  • In conclusion, our environment plays a powerful role in shaping our thoughts and actions. By creating a positive environment and priming ourselves with positive thoughts and feelings, we can increase our self-efficacy. However, it is important to remember that a positive mindset alone is not enough, and must be coupled with hard work, persistence, and a willingness to face failure.
